A property tree inventory is a written list of the trees on a parcel along with the basic information needed to make decisions about them. We build one for every new commercial client and recommend it for residential properties with more than five mature trees. This page describes the fields we capture and why each one matters.
Species and identification
We use common names with the Latin binomial in parentheses. Common names vary by region, and on a multi family property with mixed plantings, two trees with the same nickname can be entirely different species with different care needs. Tagging each tree with a small numbered aluminum disc nailed loosely to the trunk gives us a way to refer to individuals over years without trying to describe their location in paragraphs.
Diameter and approximate age
Trunk diameter is measured at four and a half feet above grade, called diameter at breast height or DBH. We record it to the nearest inch. DBH combined with species lets us estimate age within a reasonable range, which informs expected lifespan and the urgency of structural pruning decisions.
Condition rating
Each tree gets a condition score on a simple one to five scale. Five is excellent, free of defects, well sited. One is hazardous and recommended for removal. We note major defects, included bark unions, conks indicating internal decay, cavities, surface roots that have been damaged by mowing, and any past pruning cuts that did not heal well.
Recommended actions
For each tree we record a near term action and a longer term recommendation. Near term might be deadwood removal in the next visit. Long term might be a removal candidate within five to seven years as the structure declines.
